Premium card game

Coming from the developers of pixel art games Kaiju Attack and Tower of Fortune, Game Stew, Temporal War is a pay-to-play card game wherein you have to fight the Red Army forces that are trying to occupy Taiwan. Playing as the Blue Army, you will strategically build and customize your deck for better chances of winning on the battlefield.

One interesting aspect of Temporal War is its art — and not in an entirely great way. While it’s colorful and dynamic, some players have noticed that it looks generated by AI. Some imperfections are noticeable during gameplay, which may throw some players off.

Drive the Red Army away

The story happens in 2027 on a faraway parallel universe planet called Earth 103. Taiwan is under siege by the formidable Red Army and as the leader of the Blue Army, it is your duty to defeat the enemies through strategic, tactical card combat. Mechanics are lane-based, meaning there will be two rows of cards facing each other — the player’s and the opponent’s.

Cards attack one another through various rounds of combat, and the damage is determined based on the numbers indicated on the cards. Random ones are deployed from your deck in the beginning, meaning you can only formulate a strategy once you are dealt with your lot, and you need to rearrange them in the most calculated manner. Rounds only end when someone manages to plow through the cards and deal damage to the player behind the deck.

There are more than 50 types of units and almost 400 cards to collect; some of these are special ability cards or event cards that can drastically affect the gameplay and make the tables turn. Another interesting mechanic is the card ‘perma-death,’ wherein all destroyed cards don’t go back to the deck and are gone forever. While highly engaging, however, there may be a learning curve to overcome for first-time players.

Promising game with lots of cards to collect

As far as strategic, turn-based card games go, Temporal War is an enticing pick with an enticing premise. Set in a futuristic parallel Earth 103, you will play as the Blue Army units trying to thwart the Red Army invasion in Taiwan. To succeed, you must build a good deck and map out your turns on the table well. There are nearly 400 different cards to collect.

PROS

  • Almost 400 cards to collect
  • Interesting premise and challenging gameplay

CONS

  • Steep learning curve for beginners
  • Seemingly AI-generated graphics may throw some players off
